Just after noon on Saturday, October 7, Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officers were called to a business at 2706 Independence Avenue on a shooting call. Upon arrival, officers were directed inside the business where they located an adult Black male suffering from gunshot wounds.

EMS personnel were also called to the scene and pronounced the victim, 42-year-old Roderick A. Brown of Kansas City, deceased.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Brown entered the business and according to store managers, was acting “funny.” A clerk inside the Cricket Wireless store sent a text message to a male friend, asking for some assistance. By the time that friend came into the Cricket store, Brown was allegedly holding the clerk in the back room at gunpoint, attempting to rob the store. An altercation led to one or more shots being fired and the victim was struck.

Officers detained a subject of interest, an adult male, at the scene and interviewed store employees as part of the ongoing investigation. That subject of interest was released pending further investigation. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office will make a determination on whether or not charges will be filed in the case.
