The Kansas City Museum plans to reopen Corinthian Hall to the public on Thursday, July 6, 2023, after a temporary closure.

A malfunction of the HVAC system occurred on January 11, 2023, causing water damage to select areas on all four floors of Corinthian Hall. The Kansas City Museum staff, the Kansas City Museum Foundation Board of Directors, and the City of Kansas City, Missouri mobilized immediately, engaging contractors to address the initial water damage and to begin the repair and upgrade of the impacted HVAC system. HVAC is a critical operational system because the Kansas City Museum follows best practices to ensure precise temperature and humidity control for the preservation of artifacts.

In February, the Museum staff and City staff began the administrative work necessary to procure contracts and identify funds for restoration, repair, and the installation of new redundancy measures to the HVAC system.

On April 20, 2023, the City Council approved city funding for the repairs, and JE Dunn Construction assembled a team to begin work on April 24, 2023.

Due to the location of the failure, Museum collection materials on display were not in danger of compromise or damage. At this time, repairs to ceilings, floors, and electrical and mechanical systems have been completed, and the Museum is preparing for a reopening on Thursday, July 6, 2023.

The Kansas City Museum Foundation and Museum staff are grateful to the members of the City’s Finance, Governance, and Public Safety Committee, Mayor Quinton Lucas, and the City Council for recognizing the urgency of making the necessary repairs and upgrades to the mechanical systems at the Kansas City Museum, leading to the reopening of a regional cultural icon.

The buildings and grounds that comprise the Kansas City Museum are owned by the City of Kansas City, Missouri. The City also owns the buildings and grounds that comprise the National World War I Museum and Memorial, American Jazz Museum, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Black Archives, Starlight, and the Kansas City Zoo. Each of these institutions receives annual public support, and each is governed, managed, and operated by a nonprofit organization that raises private funds to grow and sustain these important City assets.

The Kansas City Museum Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that governs, manages, and operates the Kansas City Museum through a cooperative agreement with the Parks and Recreation Department.
