One man is dead following an overnight shooting in the Express Stop parking lot at 4815 Independence Avenue.
Tuesday morning around 12:30 a.m., Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officers were dispatched to Independence Avenue and Van Brunt Boulevard on a sound of shots call and possible shooting.
On arrival, officers were directed to a vehicle in the parking lot of the BP gas station. Inside that vehicle officers located an adult male victim unresponsive with apparent gunshot injury. EMS responded and declared the victim deceased here at the scene.
According to police, preliminary investigation indicates the shooting occurred in the parking lot in front of the gas station.
Detectives and crime scene investigators are processing the scene for evidence and canvassing for any witnesses. Detectives are hopeful for information to give them more information about what led up to the shooting.
It is believed there were possibly multiple people in the vicinity at the time of the shooting that may have witnessed the shooting, according to a KCPD media spokesperson.
On Tuesday afternoon the victim was identified as 23-year-old Donald Young.

KCPD is working with Partners for Peace in all of their homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
This is the 38th homicide to occur in Kansas City, Mo., in 2023. It is the third homicide in Northeast Kansas City this month.
