More than 150 shooters participated in the 7th Annual John V. Mesh Memorial Scholarship sporting clays shoot held at the Powder Creek Shooting Park in Lenexa, Kan., on Saturday.

Named for Northeast native Firefighter John Mesh, the event is a fundraiser for the scholarship that pays tuition for students pursuing degrees in the outdoors field, such as conservation or environmental sciences. This year three scholarships were awarded to Antonia Mange, Amie Lewis and Jared Schindlbeck.

John Mesh, along with Firefighter Larry Leggio, died while fighting a fire at 2600 Independence Ave. on October 12, 2015. The scholarship fund was created by John’s brother Jim and fellow firefighter John Sirna, who worked with John at Station 10 at 9th & The Paseo.

“John loved the outdoors so much, this is just a way for us to carry on his name and help students pursuing degrees in conservation and wildlife management related fields,” Jim Mesh said at Saturday morning’s pre-event safety briefing. “We truly appreciate everybody coming out and supporting this event.”
