The Kansas City Current’s plans for the world’s first stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional team continue as the club announces the official groundbreaking for the project will be Thursday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. CT.
Fans from across the region are invited to attend as the ownership group of Angie Long, Chris Long and Brittany Mahomes welcomes dignitaries from across the region and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) to take part in the festivities.
The event begins at 5 p.m. with remarks from ownership, the City of Kansas City, Port KC and others in the community, followed by key contributors to the project participating in the traditional shovel ceremony. A celebration party will cap off the night.
“This is a historic and iconic night for our organization and for women’s sports across the globe,” said Kansas City Current co-owner and founder Angie Long, “So many people have come together to make this project possible, and we can’t wait to put a shovel into the ground.”
“We’re building this stadium for our love of soccer and for Kansas City,” said KC Current co-owner and founder Chris Long, “Not only is this stadium part of our vision to be the best women’s football club in the world but it also represents an investment in a multi-purpose venue which will bring concerts, other sports and tremendous programming which will undoubtedly benefit our broader region.”
“Berkley Riverfront Park is evolving into a destination for Kansas Citians and visitors,” said Port KC President and CEO, Jon Stephens, “Our partnership with the KC Current and this first-of-its-kind stadium groundbreaking reinforces and accelerates that transformation. The KC Current aren’t just setting the standard for women’s sports, they’re building it right here in the heart of our city.”
The three stadium renderings released Tuesday unveil additional looks for the state-of-the-art build ready to get underway at Berkley Riverfront.
SW Corner from Berkley Parkway: A magnificent curved, undulating canopy for KC the stadium’s south end.
South Concourse Club Bar: A premium space for Club Seating members and ticket holders. The stadium’s open design keeps the bar close to the pitch with clear sightlines so fans don’t miss a moment of the action.
Center Pitch East View: A clean look at the stadium’s seating design. For suite holders, Club Seating members or ticket holders, and West Stand ticket holders, a spectacular view of the pitch and the Christopher S. Bond bridge.
