Children and families in the Historic Northeast and surrounding areas can explore flight, learn about animal husbandry, make their own slime and much more as Remake Learning Days Across America returns to the greater Kansas City region with more than 100 events designed to build knowledge and spark creativity.

After the many academic and social disruptions children experienced during the pandemic, Remake Learning Days Across America 2022 highlights hands-on learning activities around six themes: Arts, Maker, Outdoor Learning, Science, Technology and Youth Voice.

The events, taking place May 6-16 across the region, are part of a growing movement to tap community partners—in museums, parks, libraries, schools and other venues—so they can connect youth of all ages and their parents with engaging learning opportunities.

In Kansas City, neighborhood leaders stepped up to organize Remake Learning Days activities in their own neighborhoods. In Kansas City’s Historic Northeast families can “get slimed” at the library, soar into science at Concourse Park, and make a paper pinata, Huichol Yarn Paintings or Loteria Match Boxes in a celebration of Mexican art.

The Kansas City Public Library kicked off Remake Learning Days on Friday at Concourse Park to explore science and teach children how to make their own flying objects, including kites, frisbees, hovercrafts, and more.

Families explored creative reuse with ScrapsKC at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on May 9. Visitors used repurposed materials to create art as a type of open ended play that helps boost creativity and teaches problem solving skills.

On May 12 from 6 to 7 p.m., families can drop into the North-East Branch to make their own customizable slime. Children can pick their activator, colors and add-ins to make a slime as unique as they are. They’ll also learn about measuring ratios and chemical reactions.

Visit Sala de Arte Galería for a cultural celebration of Mexican arts and artisans at 4828 E. 9th Street on  May 15 from 12 to 3 p.m. At Sala de Arte, they’re celebrating Cinco de Mayo all month long. Make a paper piñata, Huichol Yarn Paintings, and decorate your own Loteria Matchboxes. Sala de Arte is a non profit art gallery in the Historic Northeast with a mission to make viewing and displaying art accessible to all.

In Kansas City’s North Blue Ridge neighborhood, young people can learn a new skill every day of the festival at Agape Grow Education Center, 8319 Independence Ave. From gardening and cooking to flower arranging and woodworking, there’s something for everyone. The neighborhood’s festival activities will culminate in a farm-to-table dinner on May 15 at 4:30 p.m.
