An 18-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in the July 20, 2019 shooting of three people, one fatal, at the 3700 block of Independence Avenue.

The Jackson County Prosecutor, Jean Peters Baker, announced today that Wade Bentley faces second degree murder, four felony counts of unlawful use of a weapon, four counts of armed criminal action, and possession of a controlled substance.

According to court records, Kansas City Police officers responded to the 3700 block of Independence Avenue on a shooting call on Saturday afternoon, July 2019.

Upon arrival, officers found a living male victim who officers in the direction of Roberts and Askew, which is where the shooting took place, and notified officers of the other victims.

Two living female victims and one deceased male victim were located in the area.

Leon Robinson, the male victim, died from an apparent gunshot wound to the back of his head.

One victim said the incident started in the 3500 block of Independence Avenue where Bentley accused him of stealing marijuana. A verbal altercation ensued and the witness stated Bentley shot Robinson in the back of the head and began shooting at the other victims.

Witnesses described him an angry and that he carried a chrome handgun in his waistband moments before he shot Leon Robinson. He continued to shoot, hitting one person in the leg before he fled from the scene.

An anonymous TIP was received by KCPD detectives indicating that someone by the name of “Little Chop” was responsible for the homicide.

Criminal databases showed that Bentley has been identified as a subject of interest in other shooting incidents and assaults that have occurred in Kansas City.

Prosecutors requested a bond of $500,000 cash.
