KANSAS CITY – Malliek D. Haynes, 26, of Kansas City, pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action Wednesday, April 3, in Jackson County Court in connection to the November 2017 fatal stabbing of Alton Hughes.

A judge sentenced the defendant today to 22 years on the murder conviction and 3 years on the Armed Criminal Action conviction. The judge set the sentences to run concurrently.

According to court records, Kansas City Police were dispatched Nov. 28, 2017, at approximately 3pm, to the intersection of Independence Avenue and Woodland. Officers found the victim, Hughes, at the northeast corner of the intersection, suffering from an apparent puncture wound to the chest. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Witnesses, many of them who were on a Westbound Metro bus, reported seeing a fight involving the suspect and the victim and the defendant, Haynes, standing over and allegedly striking Hughes.

Witness also said Haynes was putting away a knife. Surveillance video from the area showed Haynes at a nearby convenience store, approaching Hughes. Hayes attempted to fight Hughes, chasing him into the street. After the altercation, Hayes then left Hughes lying in the street.

Haynes was located at a residence in the 3700 block of Myrtle on January 2, 2018, after officers located the stolen vehicle linked to Haynes and his girlfriend. Parties inside the residence would not open the door for police and an Operation 100 was called. After several hours of negotiations, all of the parties exited the house and Haynes was taken in to custody.
