The Kansas City Missouri School District doesn’t want to be pushed aside or forgotten.
In light of the announcement to close the Don Bosco Charter High School in May, the school district is launching a campaign to encourage area students to “come home” to KCMSD.
“KCMSD is the foundation of this city,” KCMSD Superintendent Dr. John Covington said. “We’re not a fresh-faced start up school. We’ve educated hundreds of thousands of children since the late 19th Century and we’re not going anywhere.”
KCMSD’s graduates have included government leaders, top professionals and community advocates.
“We want to be looked at as an option,” said Andre Riley, KCMSD senior media relations specialist.
For parents and students wondering how KCMSD can cater to former charter students, Riley said the district uses Individual Education Plans (IEPs). IEPs are developed for each student who’s identified as needing additional education services, Riley said. KCMSD works with both the student and parents to develop educational strategies and place the student in the appropriate classes.
