KANSAS CITY, Missouri – After nine months of construction, students at the Frontier STEM High School (6455 E. Commerce Ave.) campus have a new space to get active. Students will utilize the indoor space to practice soccer, volleyball, and basketball, take Physical Education classes, as well as compete on Frontier’s Panthers sports teams.
The $1.8 million facility was partly funded through the school’s annual revenue sources, with the remainder supplied through a loan from Country Club Bank. Selected for the design and construction of the new facility was a local firm, Fogel-Anderson Construction Co.
After the ground-breaking last year, the students witnessed the day-to-day progress of their gymnasium taking shape. Previously, sporting activities claimed sections of the school’s asphalt parking lot prior to the completion of the much-needed addition. By necessity, those activities were always ‘weather permitting’ events.
Last year’s students were able to use the just-finished facility in April for indoor soccer practice. Frontier’s STEM Expo, held May 13th, showcased the variety of activities the gymnasium can now accommodate. Bleachers, locker rooms, and wall mats in school colors complete the bright, spacious addition. The school’s mascot, the Panther, is featured on the gym’s center point.
Frontier STEM principal Serkan Kilic expects the new gymnasium to be a great source of pride for the public charter’s students.
“This will be our first year officially having the gym,” stated Kilic. “We’re looking forward to increasing school spirit and having the students be proud of their school.”
