KANSAS CITY, Missouri — For the first six months of the years, overall crime in the East Patrol Division of the Kansas City Police Department area is down from the same time last year.
At last week’s Public Safety committee meeting, Captain Mark Terman briefed the committee members on where crime stands compared to the prior year. Terman said from Jan. 1, through June 30, homicides are down 12 percent, aggravated assault is down six percent, sexual offenses are down 33 percent, and burglaries are down roughly 20 percent. The captain also noted that most homicides this year have either been solved or cleared — only four out of the 15 are still open. However, during the same time frame, robberies are up six percent.
“Overall, [East Patrol] crime is down 17 percent,” Terman told the committee.
Terman also touched on a few other topics, including the arrest of Robert L. Brown, Jr., who could be linked to over 20 first-degree burglaries in the Northeast area.
Councilman Scott Wagner told the Captain on behalf of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association, the Northeast is grateful for Brown’s arrest.
“When you guys are determined to find somebody, by God, you do it,” Wagner said.
Terman added that the East Patrol Division is getting ready to move into the new facility this fall. Once ready, the Leon Mercer Jordan East Patrol Campus, which sits at 27th Street and Prospect Avenue, will host several open houses for the community. Terman didn’t have details on when the open houses would be scheduled because he said they are still in the planning phases.
“We’re working with the public to bring people into the station,” Terman said.
Councilman Jermaine Reed said he’s excited about the new facility because it has been a project he’s worked closely on since joining the City Council.
“It’s good to see you working with the folks in the area,” Reed said. “This changes the urban landscape.”
