Ever heard of Plato, Mo.? Didn’t think so. According to the most recent census information, the tiny southern Missouri hamlet (population 109) is now the population center of the United States. Edgar Springs, Mo., roughly 20 miles to the northeast, claimed the title back in 2000. It all goes to show that more than 100 years later, we as a population are still heeding Horace Greeley’s advice to, “Go West.”

Local guy makes good!

Northeast native and Boy Scout Troop 80 advisor John Baccala, currently the public information coordinator for the Hickman Mills School District, won the 2011 Jim Dunn Professional Development Scholarship from the Missouri School Public Relations Association (MOSPRA). Baccala used the $500 prize to attend the MOSPRA Spring Conference in Osage Beach, Mo.

He was chosen for the award by a panel of former Dunn scholarship winners.

In addition to the scholarship, Baccala was also named Western Regional Director of the Missouri Schools Public Relations Association. Who says good things don’t come out of Northeast? Congrats!

We are saddened by the recent thefts from two city fountains, one being our local Women’s Leadership Fountain at 9th and Paseo. Please keep watch as warmer weather may bring more theft opportunities for copper.
