KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Once construction is complete, Cliff Drive will turn into a one-way road for vehicles.
On Tuesday, Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners unanimously approved the Cliff Drive Traffic Management Plan, which would reduce the two-lane road to one along the three-mile long Cliff Drive, turning the scenic by-way into a one-way road for vehicles, and opening the other lane to foot and bicycle traffic. The plan also calls for the closing of two gates.
Cliff Drive is currently close because of construction including renovation of stairs/overlooks and road striping.
Kansas City’s Superintendent of Parks Forest Decker said the city worked on the plan with the Cliff Drive Corridor Management Committee. Last November, the concept was presented at a workshop for the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners and since that time, the plan has been fine tuned.
“We’ll be working to convert the lanes over the next few months,” Decker said. “We’re looking at re-opening the drive to traffic by early June.”
Before the vote, commissioner David Mecklenburg noted that the changes do not interfere with the city receiving scenic by-way funding.
