KANSAS CITY, Missouri — An underground electrical fire took place in the Carollo’s Italian Gourmet Grocery unit at the City Market late Wednesday morning. According to one Carollo’s employee, Wille Brown, there was a large explosion, felt throughout the building, which blew the covers off of the manholes along Third Street.
“I came outside and we had flames coming out everywhere, and a lot of smoke,” said Brown.
According to one Kansas City firefighter there were no injuries.
The Kansas City Fire Department promptly extinguished the fire once on the scene. But as a precautionary measure, firefighters evacuated and closed off the businesses next to Carollo’s, asking patrons to keep off of sidewalks and away from the deli.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, according to the Kansas City Fire Department, and an investigation with representatives from Kansas City Power & Light is underway.
