Kansas City Museum – history of the R.A. Long family
Every Wednesday-Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) offers free docent-guided tours of the first floor of Corinthian Hall and the first floor of the Carriage House. These tours begin in the Carriage House. Visitors learn about the history and legacy of the Long family and of the Kansas City Museum.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
‘Through the Lens of Yunghi Kim: Documenting A Path To Civility’ at the Kansas City Public Library
The Central branch of the Kansas City Public Library (14 West 10th Street, Kansas City, MO 64105) will host photographer Yunghi Kim on Thursday, November 10,  beginning at 6:30 p.m. to discuss her work and spotlight some of her favorite images from a 33-year career. In addition to the racial tumult in Baltimore last year, Kim has documented the lives of South Korea’s Comfort Women, who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese during World War II, and was taken hostage by a warlord while covering the famine in Somalia in 1992.

Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, November 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a fitness class. The class alternates between chair fitness techniques and the new “Soul-Flo” yoga activities. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise in these courses at the North-East Public Library.
Veterans Day celebration at World War I Museum
Visitors to the National World War I Museum at the Liberty Memorial (2 Memorial Drive, Kansas City, MO )on Veterans Day weekend (November 11-13) can enjoy half-price admission. In addition, free admission is offered for active duty military/veterans. The Museum offers an array of events, including a free public ceremony on Veterans Day at 10 a.m. featuring moving performances and dignitaries, public tours throughout the day on Saturday, an interactive Hands-on History program at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and much more. Scarritt Coffee Club Monthly Gathering
Scarritt Renaissance Coffee Club will host its next  Coffee Club from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 12 at the home of Kenny Snell and Barbara Brede. KC Museum’s KCFD history exhibit now open
The Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) is now presenting In the Line of Duty: A History of the Kansas City, MO Fire Department from 1868-1968, an exhibition that explores stories of courage and dedication that comprise the heritage and development of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department (KCFD). From its humble beginnings in the late 1800s to international fame, and from technological triumphs to tragic losses, the KCFD has over 100 years of proud service to its community.

Veterans Day Weekend presentation on 1916 Rising
Join Notre Dame Professor of History Rory Rapple at the Kansas City Irish Center (15 W. Linwood, Kansas City, Missouri 64111) at 2:00 p.m. on November 13 as he examines the context in which World War I’s 1916 Rising took place and the logic behind the actions of the rebels who were responsible for what contemporaries called “The Crazy Rebellion.”

 

Monday, November 14
Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, November 14, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Emmett Till: The Murder that Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, November 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m. to see author Devery Anderson, who wrote Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement. Anderson’s book, which is being adapted into a miniseries by HBO, focuses on the murder of 14-year-old Emmitt Till, an act of violence that ignited the Civil Rights movement more than 60 years ago. Anderson joins Library Director Crosby Kemper III in discussing the 1955 case against the backdrop of today’s racial tensions.

Everyone is invited to attend Blue Valley Kiwanis Club’s 2016 Chili Day fundraiser on Thursday, November 17 at the Salvation Army building at 6618 Truman Road. Members of the Kiwanis Club will serve chili from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Tickets cost $7, and include all you can eat chili, dessert & beverages! Indian Mound Neighborhood Association Meeting
Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, November 21 at the North-East Public Library at 6:30 p.m.  Immediately following the meeting, community members will have the opportunity to speak with representatives of Healing House, which is currently working on expansion plans in the neighborhood.
Money Matters event at North-East Library
Come out to the North-East Public Library on Thursday, November 17 beginning at 12:30 p.m. for a 60-minute Money Matters workshop that will teach attendees: how lenders view their credit, how to select a credit card, how to understand credit scoring models, how to review a credit report, and how to make a positive impact on your credit. All attendees will receive a $30 Library fine reduction coupon which can be applied toward fines, or lost/damaged fees.
