KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Northeast Class of 1988 wants to honor the memories of Larry Leggio and John Mesh.

This weekend, class representatives will be at three area grocery stores hosting a wristband donation drive. The wristbands are $2 each and all proceeds will go towards the creation of a memorial wall at Northeast High School. A formal dedication to the families and for the public is planned for summer 2016. The bronze wall will include a bio of both men, a description of what happened on the night of Oct. 12, 2015, and will feature a bench in front of the wall decorated with firefighter gear.

Linda Scott, organizer of the wristband drive, said she does obituaries and announcements on behalf of the class of 1988. When she learned nothing was immediately planned for the two area residents and fallen firefighters, she decided to step-up.

“It’s an honor that should be recognized,” Scott said. “I said I’ll step-up so it isn’t addressed in 10 or 15 years. We still love them because they’re still our family.”

Representatives will be at the following grocery stores from 9 a.m. — 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, collecting donations:

  • Price Chopper, 8700 E. 63rd St., Raytown
  • Price Chopper, 5800 Wilson Road, Kansas City
  • Sunfresh, 2415 NE Vivion Road, Kansas City
