Seniors and some other taxpayers can receive free tax counseling, preparation, and electronic filing of their local, state, and federal income taxes again this year.

In Historic Northeast, the American Association of Retired Persons Tax-Aide Program will be located at the Don Bosco Senior Center, 580 Campbell St. Tax filing services will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays Feb. 4 through April 15. Taxpayers should stop by the senior center or call (816) 421-3160 to check on their eligibility and make an appointment.

Those eligible for the assistance will be 60 years old or older or have a household income of less than $16,000.

During February, assistance will be provided only for Missouri rent or property tax rebates. Throughout March and April, assistance for all 2009 tax forms will be available. It will also be possible to complete income tax forms and Missouri rent and property tax rebates for the preceding three years.

Taxpayers need to bring the following documents:

• Copies of 2008 income tax returns (if available).

• All 2009 W-2 and 1099 forms showing wages, pensions, taxes withheld, interest, dividends, unemployment compensation, etc.

Under a program begun in 1968, AARP Foundation has become the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance program. In those 41 years, volunteers have helped nearly 50 million low- to middle-income taxpayers, many of whom are 60 years old or older.
