Using a space heater in an upstairs bedroom, the family at 1231 Askew was trying to stay warm.
But the warmth of the heater later turned into out of control flames.
Early this morning, Kansas City fire fighters responded to the residence to extinguish a space heater fire in an upstairs bedroom. Although the fire was contained to the bedroom, smoke damage was reported throughout the upstairs floor.
Damages are estimated at $5,000 for the structure and $2,000 in personal belongings.
No injuries were reported and the family did not need Red Cross assistance, Vitale said.
During the winter months, Kansas City fire fighters see an increase in fires due to space heaters.
“More times than not, it’s combustibles too close to a space heater (that causes the fire),” Vitale said.
Those using a space heater should ensure there’s a three foot radius of clear space around the unit, he said.
That means, furniture, clothes and other combustibles should be kept away from the heater.
“If you’re not going to be in the room, turn them (space heaters) off,” Vitale said. “Be conscientious about them and follow the manufacturers guidelines in using them.”
