With the mantra “Many hands make light work,” volunteers in the Pendleton Heights (PH) neighborhood had extra help on Saturday, Sept. 14. Soccer players and coaches from Global FC (Futbol Community) assisted with clearing brush and weeds along Mulberry Alley, then proceeded to clear weeds along the sidewalks and curbs on Brooklyn and Minnie Avenues.
PH Orchard steward Whitney Blaire was on-hand to oversee this project as these 13 young men used bushel baskets and wheelbarrows to collect and move yard waste into a trailer for transport and composting.
The Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association plans monthly work sessions to address overgrowth and trash in the alleys, which run through its neighborhood. Using the association’s logo colors of green and purple as inspiration, all the alleys have received names for natural objects that are green or purple.
By noon, the volunteers had completed the bulk of the work scheduled for the day. Once everyone put away the tools and equipment, they gathered for a group photo in the community garden.
On Saturday, Sept, 21, this neighborhood’s alley project — Fairy Lights and Alley Murals — will commence as students from the Kansas City Art Institute begin painting murals along Sage Alley. Solar “fairy lights” will be strung to complete this year’s community art installation.
