One of Kansas City Missouri School District’s shuttered schools was set on fire May 28, causing $250,000 in damages.

Kansas City Fire Department received several calls shortly before 5 p.m. May 28 of reported smoke near Truman Road and Manchester. Upon arrival, firefighters saw flames shooting from the former Manchester school, 6835 E. Truman Rd.

Multiple fire crews responded to the scene and worked through the night to extinguish the fire. For 20 to 30 minutes, firefighters worked inside to attack the fire, but switched to a defensive mode when the fire reached the ceiling and spread across the rafters. The fire began on the first floor in the southern part of the building and spread to the second floor, damaging the building throughout, including the roofline. Fire investigators have ruled the fire as arson.
