Kansas City, Mo., residents looking to get rid of harmful hazardous waste, unwanted confidential documents and leaves and brush can do so at the June 1 hazardous waste collection.

The city of Kansas City, Mo., is hosting this A.B.O.P.T. (Antifreeze, Batteries, Oil, Paint and Tire) hazardous waste collection from 8 a.m. to noon at the Robert J. Mohart Center, 3200 Wayne Ave. Residents may safely recycle unwanted hazardous wastes, shred unwanted confidential documents and dispose of yard waste.

The city will be at the event to collect and safely dispose of antifreeze, household and car batteries, automotive, cooking and heating oils, paint-related chemicals such as paint strippers, thinners and varnishes and collecting tires.

“I think it is a great benefit to our customers,” said Jennifer Kincaid, media relations coordinator for the Kansas City Water Services Department. “It is difficult for customers to make it out to our location, so these collection events are helpful to them.”

Kansas City, Mo., residents must bring proof of Kansas City, Mo., residency and space is limited to the first 400 people that arrive. Trash and electronics will not be collected at this event.

“Events like these help keep Kansas City and its residents safe from hazardous wastes,” Kincaid said. “This stops the hazardous materials from hurting people, especially their children, since these can be a hazard to everyday functioning in the household.”

Kincaid also said there will be more collection events similar to this event throughout the year. This event will be the first of the season, and it is better to do these when the weather is nicer, she said.

For persons not able to attend this June 1 event, they can drop off their household hazardous wastes at another A.B.O.P.T. collection event on Saturday, June 15, from 8 a.m. to noon at 220 NW Metro North Drive behind the Metro North Mall at the Old Theatre.

Residents can drop off their hazardous wastes year-round at the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 4707 Deramus Ave. The facility is open Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments are not required for the facility.

The wastewater division of the Kansas City, Mo. Water Services Department funds the Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The Mid-America Regional Council sponsors events that do not fall within our customer’s zip codes, Kincaid said.
