Well, the dog predicted that the charred skeleton of the Speedy Cash would be with us through the spring months and lo and behold, that prediction is coming to fruition as we speak. April’s Board of Zoning Adjustment docket came through last week and showed no docket entry for the 2600 Independence Avenue building. A few calls told the sad tale. Apparently the Speedy Cash legal eagles have decided that the neighborhood needed to be reminded of the tragic October fire that claimed two firefighter’s lives a little longer, so the Speedy Cash case won’t be heard by the BZA until at least May. Part of this blame rests on the city as well for granting yet another continuance at Speedy Cash’s request, rather than letting a contract to doze the structure as should have happened six months ago. Speedy Cash has proven again and again they don’t wish to be a good neighbor by dragging this case out for as long as humanly possible, continuing to pour salt in an open wound that just won’t heal. The dog has oft said in jest that hopefully an errant truck driver would plow through the remaining walls, or someone with a Molotov cocktail would show up to finish the job, solving the problem once and for all. We’re not condoning or suggesting this by any stretch, just surprised it hasn’t happened yet. Sadly it looks as if we’re stuck with this grim reminder of death and greed for a little longer. Not the kind of “I told you so” we bargained for, to say the least.
