George A. “Moe” Lago, 85, of Northeast Kansas City, MO, passed away July 27, 2023. Services will be held on Wednesday, August 2, at Passantino Bros. Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Moe was born June 6, 1938, in Kansas City, MO, to the late Vincent “Pops” and Rose (Maglio) Lago and was a lifelong Northeast resident. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1956 and William Jewell College in 1960. Moe’s passion was sports. He played four years in the Ban Johnson Baseball League for Lapatina’s and Western Auto and was named MVP in 1958 as a first baseman. He went on to play in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization from 1960 to 1963 and coached Ban Johnson from 1965 to 1969. The Moe Lago Award is presented annually to Ban Johnson batting champion. He also coached at Rockhurst College and was commissioner of the Columbus Park Softball League.

Moe worked as a life insurance broker for 43 years beginning in 1969. He was a longtime member of St. Anthony Parish and the Men’s Club and was a member of the American Sons of Columbus  where he helped start the Bocce program. Moe was also an active member of the Heartland Race Walkers.

Along with his parents, Moe was preceded in death by his son Mark C. Lago in 2001.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Vincent and Andrea Lago; his grandchildren, Vincent Jr. and Andrew Lago, Maria and Dana Lago; many cousins in Italy; and Katherine “Kat” Schleicher.
