Kansas City’s Water Services Department wants to clear up some confusion.
Recently, area homeowners received letters of notices from private insurance companies offering an insurance program that covers the cost to repair a break or leak in their water service lines.
If you haven’t already received a letter or notice, you may receive a similar letter in the future. The insurance coverage being offered would be a private agreement between the company and the individual property owner.
The program is not sponsored by Kansas City, Missouri Water Services Department or the City of Kansas City, Public Information Officer Colleen Doctorian stressed. The city is not involved in and does not endorse any insurance for private water lines, she said.
Homeowners are reminded that they are responsible for the repair and maintenance of their water service lines as stated in City Ordinance Section 78-22: “The owner of the premises served shall maintain the water service against leakage from but not including the curb stop or fist shutoff valve to the premises served.”
