Two dead following KCK police pursuit into Northeast

Two people are dead following a car chase by Kansas City, Kan., police (KCKPD) into Northeast Kansas City.

Just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Kansas City, Mo., police (KCPD) officers were called to the intersection of Independence and Hardesty Avenues to meet with KCKPD on a reported fatality collision.

According to police, KCKPD officers were in pursuit of a white GMC Terrain that had been stolen during an armed robbery and carjacking. The pursuit began in Kansas City, Kan., and traveled in to Kansas City, Mo. The GMC was traveling eastbound on Independence Avenue at a high rate of speed when it ran a red traffic signal at Independence and Hardesty, striking a black Nissan Ultima traveling north on Hardesty.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries, where she died on January 10. The passenger in the front seat of the Nissan was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the GMC was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. There were no KCPD officers directly involved in the pursuit.

This is fatality No. 2 and 3, compared to No. 5 at this time last year, and the investigation is ongoing.
