The first annual free Kawsmouth River Carnival sailed along the Missouri River, June 8. Hosted by the Lucid Illusion Collective and Healthy Rivers Partnership, this outdoor excursion — a playful, Mardi Gras-style, art boat parade — featured various watercrafts, including DIY trash boats.
Participants met at 3 p.m. at Riverfront Park, before shuttling to its starting line — Kaw Point Boat Ramp, 1403 Fairfax Trafficway. The race did not officially kick-off until around 5 p.m., with over 30 boats prepared to depart.
The river parade featured kayaks, canoes and motorboats, which included decorated and non-decorated vessels.
Carnival Coordinator, Jaclyn Dalbey, welcomed all watercrafts — as long as they were deemed safe. Live music was offered on water by Kyle Little’s Riverbeat Rascals, as well as an additional band, which played alongside the river.
Officers from KCFD and Missouri Highway Patrol attended — providing water-rescue teams if needed.
This family-friendly event incorporated children, and dogs within the boat race.
With high river water levels, it created challenges for those watching the parade and its participants. However, the event did continue as scheduled.
Select participants received prizes for intricate boat creations and decorations.
