Historic Northeast already lost one post office station. It would be a shame to lose yet another one. United States Postal Service (USPS) officials are considering closing the post office station at 105 N. Hardesty and held a public meeting July 26 to discuss the station’s future.

According to a USPS spokesperson, over the last several years, the Northeast post office has seen a 20 percent drop in revenue. Sometimes, that easy access, online bill pay takes its toll.

Northeast is on the upswing with the recently approved Independence Avenue Community Improvement District and the number of neighborhood groups willing to pitch in to make Northeast a better place to live. The last thing we need is to lose our neighborhood post office. Having a neighborhood post office is vital to area businesses and residents. This li’l newshound frequents the neighborhood post office quite often. While this newshound loves her daily walks, walking those additional miles to the James Crew post office station just wouldn’t be convenient.

One option that USPS officials discussed is operating the post office at reduced hours. While we hate to see reduced hours, it’s much better than losing the post office altogether.
