Jamaine Mitchell just wanted to buy some marijuana. Instead, he ended up with a swollen lip and became the victim of a hijacking.

On March 29, Mitchell met with Morris L. Smith, 41, near Prospect and 27th to purchase marijuana. Smith directed Mitchell to drive to an undisclosed location, where they picked up 39-year-old Karl D. Howard. Shortly thereafter, Smith told Mitchell to stop and pull over. When Mitchell parked the vehicle, Smith allegedly punched him in the face and said, “Give me your money! Don’t make me shoot you.”

Mitchell obeyed, forking over $285 in cash, along with his cell phone.

Smith ordered Mitchell to exit the vehicle, who obliged, and fled the scene southbound on Paseo from Missouri.

Using a phone at 499 Paseo, Mitchell called the Kansas City Missouri Police.

When officers arrived, they noticed Mitchell had a swollen and bleeding upper lip.

During their interview, officers heard a traffic stop on the radio that involved the stolen vehicle.

Mitchell identified those inside the vehicle as Smith and Howard.

Smith waived his Miranda Rights and said he obtained the vehicle through a marijuana transaction and did not assault Mitchell or take his vehicle without consent.

Smith has been charged with second degree robbery and his bond is set at $100,000.
