KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Kansas City Public Schools is hosting a special training session regarding sexual harassment and discrimination.
The session, which will be given in nine different languages, starts at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Northeast Middle School, 4904 Independence Ave. Title IX is the statute that prohibits discrimination or harassment based on sex in any federally funded education program or activity. In addition, KCPS has its own rigorous policies explicitly forbidding that type of behavior against any student, staff or community member. All staff and students are currently being provided with training to ensure that they understand the intent and content of Title IX, how they can report violations and the consequences if the law is violated.
The Sept. 30 training will include an approximately 30-minute long video with individual translators for each of these eight languages (in addition to English):
• Spanish
• Vietnamese
• Burmese
• Karen
• Kinyarwanda
• Swahili
• Somali
• Arabic
This training is being hosted in order to facilitate the needs of families whose primary home language is something other than English. Training of this type can often be confusing or intimidating for English-language learner students and their families. Students are normally required to take a short quiz following the training. Students who attend this special Title IX training session with their parents or guardians will be exempted from the quiz requirement.
