BREAKING: Saturday Morning, just after 4 a.m., Sept. 7, Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) dispatched to Independence Plaza’s 12th and Benton, responding to what was thought to be a non-injury accident.

However, after arriving on the scene, officers discovered an unoccupied vehicle west of the 12th St. intersection. This automobile additionally showed indications of wreckage including possible gunfire, which may have entered said vehicle — injuring its occupants— according to a release from KCPD media unit.

Upon further investigation and canvassing, officers located an unresponsive adult male, suffering from a gunshot wound near an apartment building — diagonal, south and east from said intersection.

This individual was declared deceased by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) who arrived to the scene.

The victim was later identified by investigators as Michael B. Waylee. He was 20 years old.

Following the preliminary investigation, officers discovered the original vehicle was traveling westbound, rapidly around 1 a.m., on 12th St. When crossing its intersection with Benton Boulevard, the motorist sideswiped a vehicle — leading the individual to lose control, striking an additional automotive, which was parked west of Benton. The original driver fled the scene following the accident, according to KCPD media unit.

During the same hour, shots were fired at 12th and Hardesty. An adult male experiencing bullet wounds was transported to a local hospital. These injuries are classified as non-life threatening at this time.

KCPD is actively investigating a possible connection between these two incidents.
