KANSAS CITY, Missouri – With the building finally complete, curious community members got to peak inside the halls of the new Kansas City Police Department Headquarters.

The rededication ceremony of the Police Headquarters, 1125 Locust St., on Thursday, Nov. 13, featured public tours of almost every floor, historical displays from the KCPD’s 140 year history and speakers including Police Chief Darryl Forté, Mayor Sly James, Police Board President Alvin Brooks, and Terry Dunn, who is Chairman of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and President and CEO of JE Dunn Construction Group.

Work concluded on the renovation of the headquarters only recently and was the first remodeling the building saw since it was constructed in 1938. The $28 million remodel was funded by the quarter-cent public safety sales tax approved by voters. The renovation provides adequate space and up-to-date facilities for administrative and investigative employees of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department. Renovations include the addition of a tower on the north side of the building and a spacious community room. The headquarters also is now compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Since the headquarters is a secure facility, the public generally does not have access for tours, however, the rededication ceremony afforded the public a rare look behind the scenes of police work and a chance to see the significant upgrades. The night also saw several interruptions by Ferguson protestors, however they were quickly escorted out of the building by police.
