KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The popular car-sharing service Zipcar is coming to Kansas City.
Kansas City, Missouri officials introduced the new partnership with Zipcar during a Monday, October 24 news conference hosted at Union Station. Mayor Sly James was on hand for the announcement, which revealed that Zipcar will soon be deploying eight vehicles throughout Kansas City’s urban core: two will be stationed in the River Market at 3rd and Delaware, two will be downtown at 14th and Baltimore, two will be at 19th and Main, and two will be outside of Union Station at Pershing and Main.
“This unique service will certainly add tremendous benefit and mobility options to our downtown corridor,” said James. “We’ve got more people living downtown than ever before and more people are in the process of making the move. I’m grateful Zipcar has chosen to expand downtown and I’m excited to see the increased connectivity and mobility of our residents.”
The service requires users to pay a small monthly fee in order to receive a ZipCard, which can be swiped along the window of Zipcar’s in order to unlock the vehicles. Users are then charged an hourly rate to drive the cars. When a customer is finished with their trip, they simply have to drop the vehicle back off in it’s designated parking spot to end the transaction. The cost of the a reservation includes insurance, gas, and up to 180 miles of driving.
Included among the Kansas City fleet are a Subaru Crosstrek named “Royal,” a Nissan Versa dubbed “Scout,” and a Jeep Renegade called “Chief.” For more information about this car-sharing service, visit zipcar.com.
