Friday evening the Kansas City Missouri Police Department partnered with Hy-Vee food stores and the Harvesters Food Network to sponsor a free, drive through ham dinner giveaway at KCPD’s East Patrol Campus located at 27th and Prospect.
Prior to the event cars were lined up around the block waiting to get in and take advantage of the free offer. According to East Patrol Community interaction officer Pat Byrd, “this is just another positive outreach tool to reach the community around us,” Byrd said as he directed traffic through the drive-up food giveaway.
According to Chris Wiltfong, a Store Director for HyVee on the Kansas side, “this is one stop in 15 for the One-Step, hams for the holidays tour and is another way for us to give back to our community here in Kansas City, ” Wiltfong said. “Hormel, the KCPD and Harvesters have been great partners, this is our fourth year doing this and this is just one stop in Hy-Vee’s 8th state store Network, Wiltfong said.
The event normally takes place around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, but was put off this year until spring due to COVID restrictions. This is the only stop in Kansas City. Within 20 minutes roughly half the hams were gone.
