House of News scores big at MO Press Convention

Once again, Kansas City’s Northeast News has raised the bar for Community Journalism in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast community. The independent, locally owned media outlet brought home a number of awards for excellence in Journalism, as well as Advertising and Marketing, in the Weekly category of member newspapers across the state of Missouri.


Managing Editor Abby Hoover won the 2022 William E. James Outstanding Young Journalist Award in the Weekly category. She shares the award with former Northeast News Intern Layne Stracener who now writes for the Jefferson City Daily News.


This year’s awards in the Advertising and Marketing categories include:


First Place,
Best Full Page Ad awarded to Art and Creative Director Bryan Stalder promoting the Independence Avenue CID’s Monarch Mariposa Garden event


First Place,
Best Single Classified Display Ad, awarded to Assistant Graphic Designer Bethany Alzanadi for an ad produced for Three Bees Lawn Service


First Place, Best Ad Series awarded to Bryan Stalder for ads produced for the Independence Avenue Community Improvement District’s (CID) International Marketplace series


First Place,
Most Creative Use of Full Color in an Ad awarded to Bryan Stalder for ads developed for Scimeca’s Online Market and Deli


First Place,
Best Sponsored Content/Native Advertising awarded to Abby Hoover and Bryan Stalder for sponsored content developed for the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce


First Place,
Best Multimedia Campaign, a brand new category combining print, podcast and social media awarded to Michael Bushnell, Abby Hoover and Bryan Stalder


Second Place, Best Print Advertising Campaign awarded to Bryan Stalder for a print ad campaign designed for The Bishop Sullivan Center


Third Place,
Best Ad smaller than a full page but no smaller than a 1/4 page, awarded to Bethany Alzanadi and Bryan Stalder for an ad developed for Musaletti’s Pizza Kansas City football schedule promo


Honorable Mention,
Best Newspaper-Produced Insert awarded to Michael Bushnell, Abby Hoover, Dorri Partain, Bethany Alzanadi and Krystin Miller for a holiday wrapping paper/calendar newspaper wrap


The Northeast News also added to its growing collection of awards for excellence in Journalism by securing eight awards this year in various categories. Those awards include:


Second Place,
Best Editorial Cartoon awarded to Bryan Stalder for his “Fruit Loops” cartoon


Third Place,
Multi-Media Reporting awarded to Abby Hoover, Michael Bushnell and Bryan Stalder for a series of multi-media stories on the re-opening of the Kansas City Museum


Third Place,
Tilghman Cloud Memorial Editorial Award awarded to Publisher Michael Bushnell for his Editorial entitled “The time for strong neighborhoods is now”


Third Place,
Best Story About Religion awarded to Managing Editor Abby Hoover for a story on St. Anthony Parish completing its restoration in preparation for its centennial


Third Place,
Best Story About the Outdoors awarded to Abby Hoover for her story entitled “Young PH resident requests park improvements”


Third Place, Best Investigative Reporting awarded to Abby Hoover for her story on Catalytic Converter Theft


Honorable Mention,
Best News Photograph awarded to 2021 Intern Corbin Smith for his photo for the story entitled “KC Tenants celebrate funding of tenant advocacy office, preview affordability plans”


Honorable Mention,
Best News or Feature Series awarded to Michael Bushnell, Dorri Partain and Bryan Stalder for their series on National Park postcards
