Score 1 For Health kicked off its first set of health screenings for the year at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCUMB) Sept. 18.

Score 1 For Health provided health screenings for youngsters from the nearby Scuola Vita Nuova charter school.

The screenings included a physical assessment and dental, vision, blood pressure, height and weight checks.

Score 1 For Health is a community outreach program that KCUMB has integrated into its curriculum and both first year and second year medical students volunteer their time.

Each year, KCUMB medical students, under the supervision of physician instructors, conduct free health screenings for more than 13,000 elementary students in the Kansas City metro area.

The screenings are designed to detect any physical problems early in the child’s development, so he or she does not fall behind in class as a result of an illness or inability to see, hear or concentrate.

Score 1 For Health is now in its 20th year.

The Score 1 For Health Day also included a nutritious lunch, a puppet show about bullying, lessons about anatomy for seventh graders, and a trip to the KCUMB community garden for the fourth graders.

KCUMB’s community garden features 20 beds with a variety of plants, like cucumber, peppers, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, cantaloupe and more. This year, KCUMB is donating the produce to the Della Lamb food pantry.

During the trip to the garden, fourth graders learned about the ins and outs of a garden and also picked tomatoes to make their very own homemade salsa.
