27th and Chestnut shooter charged

By Daisy Garcia Montoya

Charges have been filed against 36-year-old Eric Thomas following a fatal shooting Wednesday, July 1.

Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officers responded to reports of shots fired at 27th Street and Chestnut Trafficway on Wednesday around 7:15 p.m.

Upon arrival, witnesses guided the officers to an area between houses where an unresponsive, Black male laid on the ground.

EMS pronounced the victim, 28-year-old Darren Marshall, dead at the scene.

The suspect left the scene in a green Pontiac westbound from Chestnut, according to witnesses. Officers located the vehicle which led to a vehicle pursuit ending at 3rd and James in Kansas City, Kansas, where the suspect was arrested.

When stopped, the driver, later determined to be the defendant, spontaneously said, “Somebody shoot at me, I’m shooting back,” according to the prosecutor’s office.

Thomas faces charges of murder in the 2nd degree, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.

Prosecutors requested a $150,000 bond.
