KANSAS CITY, Missouri – City Union Mission will host a dinner and chapel service on Veterans Day to honor U.S. veterans from all branches of the military, according to a press release issued by the organization on Thursday, November 10.

The Veterans Day ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 11 at City Union Mission’s chapel (1108 E. 10th Street), with words from Pastor Ron Haley. A complimentary dinner will be served immediately following the service, and veterans will also be offered a Bible and a dog tag to show the Mission’s support for their military sacrifice.

City Union Mission Executive Director Dan Doty spoke of the importance of outreach efforts in support of Kansas City’s veteran homeless population in the November 10 press release.

“Like many homeless individuals, veterans are faced with a shortage of affordable housing, lack of a livable income and inadequate access to health care,” said Doty. “The majority of the homeless veterans in our care also battle substance abuse problems or suffer from mental illnesses, and in some cases they struggle with both.”

According to the release, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development estimates that roughly 40,000 veterans are homeless in American on any given night. City Union Mission further estimates that 10% of the men waiting in line for the Mission’s emergency shelter at any given time are veterans.

All veterans and citizens are invited to join in the November 11 recognition of those who’ve risked it all in service to our country.
