Families and teenagers can enjoy the mayor’s programs with a final summer hurrah.

To conclude the Club KC and Mayor’s Night Hoops, Kicks and Nets, the second annual Sly’s Rock the Block end-of-summer celebration will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, in the south parking lot at Union Station.

Club KC is a free event hosted by the Kansas City, Mo., Mayor’s Office, the city of Kansas City, Hot 103 Jamz, KC Hoops and the Guadalupe Center. Club KC allows middle and high school students to enjoy safe summer activities. Events occur every weekend and can feature DJs and dancing, basketball games, swimming, video games and snack sales.

“So far, over 6,000 people attend Club KC and a little over 1,000 people participate in the Mayor’s Nights sports,” said Roosevelt Lyons of the Mayor’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement.

Last year more than 1,000 people attended Sly’s Rock the Block event. This year, Lyons said that number is expected to double.

The Mayor’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement and Kansas City’s Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting the second annual Sly’s Rock the Block event. The event is free and will have family activities from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“There will be free food, hamburgers and hot dogs, that kind of stuff, family games, inflatables and we will also have a band,” Lyons said. “The Sequel will be performing. They feature some of the members from the old band, Low Key.”

At 8 p.m., the final Club KC event of the summer will take place. The Club KC celebration will continue until midnight, when the Kansas City’s curfew will be enforced.

“For those who want it, (Club KC) provides a place to go,” Lyons said. “In Kansas City there’s not many places to go and hang out within walking distance. We don’t have a movie theater or bowling ally that people can walk to. Club KC offers a place to go and hang out with friends without all the adults telling them what to do.”
