Well, another year has come and gone for this News-dog and we’re mighty thankful to still be a part of the landscape in this Cow-town. It’s been a banner year here in HNE so we thought we’d throw out some props to some of the folks making the wheels turn in our community.
City Manager Troy Schulte tops that list, given the number of events he’s attended here in HNE both publicly and privately. He’s also been integral in making sure that projects such as the new Independence and Benton intersection improvements and the establishment of the Avenue CID have been completed. Additionally, he’s been a strong proponent of the ongoing restoration and redevelopment of the Kansas City Museum along with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department (led by Mark McHenry), another staunch supporter of Historic Northeast. Through McHenry’s expertise, the Kansas City Museum was transferred from Union Station back to the city’s hands. Working with new Museum Director Anna Marie Tutera, the Museum is at long last getting the overdue attention it deserves and is poised to launch the new year with some big plans and new programming.
While we’re handing out props, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge all of the hard work and dedication that CID workhorse and Urban Dirty dude Brett Shoffner puts into the mix. Through his tireless work, Kessler Park and the Cliff Drive Scenic Byway have become a destination for trail enthusiasts both on foot and on two wheels. Over 10,000 volunteer hours have gone into the transformation, and new trails and features are being added almost daily.
Additionally, Independence Avenue continues its transformation under the guidance of CID and Chamber President Bobbi Baker-Hughes, the entire CID team and the Avenue Ambassadors. While the Avenue may still have its issues, in the 26 years this dog has lived here, it’s never looked better.
