Child kidnapped by mom who lost custody

Police were searching for a child Friday afternoon after she was kidnapped by her own mother, who lost custody of the girl recently.

Sandra Petty, 34, took the girl from the child’s aunt’s house in the 2400 block of Chelsea Avenue Friday. Children’s Services had taken the 7-year-old girl from her mother’s custody the day before this incident.

Although police did not issue an Amber Alert, not believing the child to be in danger, they did issue a statement initially stating Petty appeared to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and was combative and behaving erratically.

Police located Petty and the child less than two hours later at Petty’s residence in the 1700 block of East 12th Terrace. The child was unharmed and placed in protective custody. Petty may faces charges of parental kidnapping.
