The first of these will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, where he will highlight his work — co-authored with Steve Noll — “Kansas City: Our Collective Memories.”

Mathews spent most of his career as a professional photographer. Capturing a variety of subjects, Mathews photographed anywhere from individual clients to businesses such as the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Children’s Mercy Hospital — which he shot for around 30 years, according to his biography.

After capturing Kansas City through a lens for over 40 years, Mathews took to a different medium — narration.

2010 saw the publishing of his first book — “Elmwood Cemetery: Stories of Kansas City.” His written work has focused mainly on historical landmarks and scenic locations with “Kansas City: Our Collective Memories” as no exception.

Mathews will host three additional lectures during this Kansas City Museum series — including Oct. 12, where he will showcase “Union Cemetery: Lessons for the Future, from the Garden of Time” for literature enjoyers alike.

For those interested in attending, tickets will be $5 per person and can be purchased on the Kansas City Museum website: https://kansascitymuseum.org/events/3561/
