Autorrepresentación ayuda a discapacitados de MO a una vida más plena

Al menos uno de cada tres adultos de Missouri vive con algun tipo de discapacidad, lo que a veces puede suponer un reto a la hora de desenvolverse en el mundo.


People First of Missouri lleva ayudandoles a defenderse desde que se fundo en Kansas City en la decada de 1990.


Su presidente, Roger Crome, afirma que la mision es ayudar a las personas a vivir como desean en comunidad. Crome cree que lo que marca la diferencia son las relaciones que se establecen con otras personas en todos los niveles de la autorrepresentacion, lo que da lugar a lo que el llama una “tutoria natural”.


“Hay algunos que llegan y ni siquiera se dan cuenta de que pueden hablar claro -al principio no sienten que pueden hacerlo- y luego se convierten en lideres de proyectos en la organizacion,” asegura Crome.
La mayoria de las 20 secciones de People First de todo el estado se reunen una vez al mes. Pueden tener un orador invitado, debatir sobre legislacion o identificar problemas locales para llamar la atencion del comite directivo estatal. Crome dice que la organizacion tambien identifica prioridades para hacer mas llevadera la vida diaria de sus miembros. Actualmente, se centran en que la vivienda y el transporte sean accesibles.


El llama a People First una “comunidad inclusiva”, dirigida por y para personas con una amplia variedad de discapacidades.


“Aceptamos a todas y todos y creemos en el poder del apoyo mutuo para desarrollar liderazgo, autodeterminacion y empoderamiento, dice Crome, “sea cual sea la vision que cada uno tenga de ello.”


Anna Montaldo, de San Luis, es defensora de discapacitados y nacio con paralisis cerebral. Dice que hablar abiertamente de tu discapacidad puede evitar que otros te eviten por miedo.


“En realidad te estas ayudando a ti misma a tener una vida mejor estando orgulloso de quien eres y no ocultandolo,” explica Montaldo.


Montaldo dice que le gustaria que menos adultos se sintieran inclinados a disuadir a los ninos de mirar o preguntarse acerca de las personas con discapacidad.


“Si vamos a hacer eso en la sociedad, ¿como podran las personas con discapacidad vivir una vida normal?,” opina Montaldo. “Necesitamos gente abierta, en publico, que nos vean.”


Montaldo es becaria 2023 de la Red de Recursos para la Autodefensa o “SAR-TAC”, una de las seis seleccionadas en todo el pais, y esta desarrollando una formacion en liderazgo para personas con discapacidades.


Julio es el Mes del Orgullo de la Discapacidad.
