ABOPT Collection Event
Rid your household of hazardous waste like antifreeze, batteries, oil, paint and tires at the ABOPT Collection Event from 8 a.m. to noon at the Robert J. Mohart Center, 3200 Wayne, Kansas City, Mo. In addition, you can dispose of your leaf and brush waste. ProShred will also be on-site for document shredding. The event is for Kansas City, Mo., residents only. Proof of residency will be required. Space is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis.
City Market’s “Get Your Sweet On!”
Check out City Market’s Farm to Table Celebration Series, “Get Your Sweet On!” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the City Market Square. The event celebrates the more than 15 farmer’s market vendors who produce not only cookies and candy, but everything sweet, like homemade jams, jellies, fudge, pies, honey and more. Also, University of Missouri Extension will be blending naturally sweet fruit smoothies and offering free samples in the Farm to Table Kitchen. Kids’ activities will be available in the Oddball Kids area from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Newhouse Shelter Showdown
Support Newhouse, a women’s shelter, through the Newhouse Shelter Showdown event on Friday, June 8, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Westport Flea Market, 817 Westport Rd., Kansas City, Mo. Cost is $20 in advance and $25 at the door and includes all-you-can-eat burgers and beer (plus a side). In addition, trivia and beer pong will be played. Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers Tips Hotline, KCPD and UMKC will host a community shred event on June 9 from 8 a.m. to noon in the west parking lot of the UMKC campus, 5115 Oak St., Kansas City, Mo. Protect yourself from identify theft and bring your confidential documents to be shredded by Shred-it.
Mattie Rhodes Día de la Familia
Mattie Rhodes Center will host its Día de la Familia festival on Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 148 N. Topping Ave., Kansas City, Mo. Activities will include health screenings, music, cooking and Zumba demonstrations, kids’ activities and more. Also on June 9, Mattie Rhodes will host a youth summit from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the center’s building. The youth summit will include special speakers, a dance, a free lunch and raffle giveaways.
