Fountain Day at The Concourse
Come out to The Concourse in Kessler Park (Benton and St. John) on Wednesday, April 12, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the official start of 2017 fountain season with the City’s Parks and Recreation department. Join the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, the City of Fountains Foundation, and musical guest Grand Marquis for this annual celebration of one of Kansas City’s most historic parks. Food trucks and lawn games will also be available during this season-opening event.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

North-East Library ESL classes
Come learn and practice English at the North-East Public Library Branch on Monday’s and Thursday’s from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Let the library help you adjust to U.S. culture by helping with speaking, writing, and reading English. For more information, contact the library at (816) 701-3485.

NEKC Targeted Neighborhood Violence Reduction Initiative
The newly launched NEKC Targeted Neighborhood Violence Reduction Initiative will hold its next meeting on Friday, April 14, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at 2657 Independence Ave. COMBAT has approached a number of stakeholders from the northeast Kansas City area, including EPD Commander, Police and Prosecutor’s Personnel from NOVA, and executive staff from the KC School district. The objective of the initiative is to prevent and reduce violent crime in the targeted area of Northeast Kansas City. Stop by the April 14 meeting to learn more!

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, April 14, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise.

Miss Shizuoka: Restored at Reunited – at KC Museum
The Kansas City Museum has welcomed home Miss Shizuoka, who was on a year-long loan from January to December 2016 to the prefecture of Shizuoka in Japan. Miss Shizuoka (also known as Fujiyama Mihoko) is a Japanese Friendship Doll; she is one of 58 dolls sent from Japan to the United States in 1927 as part of a doll exchange between the United States and Japan. Shizuoka is a prefecture of Japan and is home to Mt. Fuji. In 2016, over 30,000 people in Japan visited Miss Shizuoka for her homecoming. While in Japan, Miss Shizuoka was restored and received a new kimono and accouterments. Miss Shizuoka will be on display in Corinthian Hall in her new kimono and with her new accouterments until April 29.

Scarritt Renaissance Easter Egg Hunt
Stop by The Concourse (220 S. Benton) on Saturday, April 15 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. for the neighborhood’s 4th annual Easter Egg Hunt.  The event is for all children, ages 12 and under, and will be split into three separate hunts divided by age. The Easter Bunny will be in attendance, and prizes will be distributed for those who find special Easter eggs. If you would like to donate or volunteer, email DJR@swbell.net.

Blue Valley Park – Easter Candy Hunt
Come out to Blue Valley Park (23rd and Topping) on Saturday, April 15 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. for an Easter Candy Hunt and free giveaways including 35,000 pieces of candy, two bicycles (boy and girl), a 10” Android Tablet, 30 Easter baskets, and plenty of food and drinks. Free Spring Festivals at KC Community Centers
Also on Saturday, April 15, enjoy free Spring Festivals at KCMO Community Centers. From 12:00-2:00 p.m., Garrison Community Center (1124 E. 5th St.) will be hosting face painting, arts and crafts, music and games, and an egg hunt. At Gregg-Klice Community Center (1600 John “Buck” O’Neil Way), attendees can enjoy crafts, music, entertainment and candy bags from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Scarritt Renaissance seeking volunteers for KaBOOM! build
The Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association is now seeking volunteers to help with the construction of a KaBOOM! playground on Saturday, April 22, beginning at 9:00 a.m. No matter your skill level, the neighborhood can use your help. This playground is for children 2-5 years of age, which will provide them a safer alternative to previously-built playground for 5-12 year old children. If you have construction skills, if you have the ability to carry parts to those building the equipment, or if you are willing to help with food pick up,the neighborhood can use your help. If you have hand tools, mobile table/mitre saws, heavy duty long extension cords, Scarritt leaders ask that you bring them and be sure they are labeled with your name. Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, April 17 at the North-East Public Library at 6:00 p.m.

Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, April 17 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, April 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, April 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center (1512 Van Brunt).

Taste of SVN Night – April 20
The community is invited to Scuola Vita Nuova (535 Garfield) on the night of Thursday, April 20 beginning at 5:30 p.m. for its ‘Taste of SVN’ event. SVN has over 200 students who speak seven different languages, and all of the school’s cultures will be featured at this special event. “Taste of SVN” will give SVN families the opportunity to learn and socially connect with various cultures that make the school unique. Join in to celebrate elements of SVN’s culture or ethnicity through, music, food, and dance. Families are invited to the school to share their favorite family dish. Special performances include student exhibits of their native country, a “Take the Stage” 4th grade dance performance, live music by “Calle Vida,” and dances from KC Team and Viva Social Team.
