Whittier Elementary Back to School Extravaganza

AmeriCorps VISTA will be hosting a Back to School Extravaganza at Whittier Elementary from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for Whittier students and their families. AmeriCorps is promoting the event as a “family fun night” which will feature a free dinner and promote the importance of attendance. There will also be games and other activities for students and parents. Community organizers will provide further information on family engagement and provide coats and books for students. There will also be entertainment.

Story Time and Craft

Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. Parents and kids will enjoy stories geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers. Get ready for songs, tongue twisters and dramatic play.

Computer Class

Join North-East Public Library for a class on the fundamentals of Microsoft Word which will focus on templates as well as the various menu options. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

Sunday Family Movie

Join North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd., for its Sunday Family Movie at 2 p.m. at the library. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Indian Mound Thacher Meeting

Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, to discuss viable options for the former Thacher Elementary and provide progress updates. All are invited to attend this meeting, regardless of whether you live in Indian Mound or not. The meeting will be held at North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd., Kansas City, Mo.

Community Development Workshop

The Community Capital Fund is partnering with Communities Creating Opportunities and the Greater Kansas City Local Initiatives Support Corporation to offer a free Community Development Workshop. The workshop will bring together neighborhood associations, non-profits, public agencies, residents and other stakeholders that live and work in historically under-invested and under-resourced communities in Kansas City, Mo. Workshop participants will be able to network with people doing similar work, share insights on how to best address issues and opportunities in the area, and connect to critical resources. In addition, keynote speaker Rodrigo Davies will discuss the role of crowdfunding in civic engagement and civic projects. Scarritt Coffee Club Monthly Gathering

Scarritt Renaissance Coffee Club will host its monthly gathering from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 8. Guest of honor is to be announced. MoDOT Public Meetings

The Missouri Department of Transportation will host a series of public meetings to discuss the preferred alternative regarding the The Paseo interchange to the Blue Ridge Cutoff on I-70. In 2013, MoDOT gathered community feedback on the three improvement alternatives under consideration for I-70: No-Build, Geometric Improvements, and Interchange Consolidations. Based on public input and detailed analysis, MoDOT is recommending a Preferred Alternative for the roadway. The first mobile meeting will be held on Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lucile H. Child Care Provider Training at Woodland

City of Kansas City Budget Hearings

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will host a series of budget hearings regarding the proposed FY 2014-15 activity budget.
