Make KCPS better

Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) needs your input! KCPS will host a public meeting from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Manual Career Tech, 1215 E. Truman Rd. Help KCPS develop a long-range facilities master plan that will guide some new attendance boundaries and capital improvements decisions for school years 2015 to 2019.

 

Friday October 25

Front Porch Grand Opening

Join Grace Church of the Nazarene, 4300 Independence Ave., as it celebrates its 90th anniversary with a grand opening of its new community front porch. The event begins at 6 p.m. and is open to the public. The event will include a variety of worship bands and choirs. Refreshments will also be served. Bring your own chairs if you’d like.

Story Time and Craft

Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. Parents and kids will enjoy stories geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers. Get ready for songs, tongue twisters and dramatic play.

Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Kansas City Central Patrol Division, along with the Main Street Corridor Development Corporation/Main Street Community Improvement District, will host a Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MainCor parking lot, 3215 Main St. Safely disposed of unwanted drugs, no questions asked.

VFW Pumpkin Carving Contest

VFW Post #9997 is hosting its Second Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest at noon at the post, 6801 Wilson Rd. There will be food and prizes for the youngsters. Then, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Jackie Foster & The Shelter will perform.

REACH OUT/Health Fair

Grace United Community Ministries, 811 Benton, Kansas City, Mo., will host its annual REACH OUT event and health fair from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Join Grace for a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and take advantage of the health fair which will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The health fair will include vision screenings for children and adults, blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, BMI/weight checks, EKG and more. There will also be health education booths. From noon to 1:30 p.m., a feeding and clothing distribution event will be held for homeless women, men and children.

Saint Anthony Spaghetti Dinner

Saint Anthony at St. Joseph Hall, 3208 Lexington Ave., Kansas City, Mo., will host a spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meal includes spaghetti & meatballs, salad and bread. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 10 and younger. Coffee is free. Beverages and desserts will be sold separately for $1 each. Carry-out is available.

True Grit – Read It/Watch It Event

Watch the 2010 film version of “True Grit” at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd. at 1:30 p.m. Then join discussion facilitator Kaite Stover for a lively conversation comparing the book to its cinematic interpretation. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to read Charles Portis’ novel prior to attending the film screening.

ID Shield Event

Central Bank of Kansas City will host an ID Shield Event on Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the main branch, 2301 Independence Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. Shred your personal documents for free from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and receive free credit reports from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, you’ll receive tips and resources for protecting your identity. There will also be prizes and a kids’ trick-or-treat. Customers and the community are welcome to attend.

KC Museum’s Family Fun Day: Music is My First Love

The Kansas City Museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd. will host its First Sunday Family Fun Day on Nov. 3 from noon to 4 p.m. Create arts and crafts and listen to music inspired by the museum’s newest exhibit: “Music is My First Love: The Lupe M. Gonzalez Orchestra.” Visitors will listen to local musicians and make their own musical instrument. Visitors will also create their own journal and picture frames, and so much more! Cost is free.

Kansas City Museum Hard Hat Happy Hour

Explore Kansas City Museum’s 100-plus-year-old mansion home, Corinthian Hall, with a glass of wine from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 7. You’ll see Corinthian Hall in mid-renovation, the bare interior of the building exposed for the first time in decades. Examine 100-year-old craftsmanship and hear first-hand about plans for the grand mansion’s future from museum staff. Cost is $5. Tour members must be 21 to attend and wear closed-toe shoes.

Independence Plaza Monthly Meeting

Independence Plaza Neighborhood Association will host its monthly meeting on Nov. 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary. The 2014 elections will be held.
