Power of Reading: A Celebration of the Written Word
Adult student of Literacy KC will share their heartfelt stories of how reading has transformed their lives during the fifth annual “Power of Reading: A Celebration of Written Word.” The event will be held at the Kansas City Public Library, Truman Forum Auditorium, 4801 Main St., Kansas City, Mo. A free reception will begin at 6 p.m. in the lobby. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Local authors will also read original writings and reveal the impact of reading in their lives. The event is co-sponsored by the Writers Place and Literacy Kansas City.
La Chalupa Farmer’s Market
Mattie Rhodes’ La Chalupa’s Farmer’s Market, 148 N. Topping, is open for the season and will be held every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Enjoy fresh eggs, vegetables, fruit, baked goods and more. SNAP/EBT is accepted.

Story Time and Craft
Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. Parents and kids will enjoy stories geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers. Get ready for songs, tongue twisters and dramatic play.

Mural Painting Celebration
The North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd., in partnership with the Halo Foundation and Community Police Team, will host a Mural Painting Celebration at the library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 21. During the event, the mural in the library’s parking lot will be repainted and volunteers are welcome.
Director’s Hard Hat Tour
Take an extended tour of Corinthian Hall, the more than 100-year-old old home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family, with Interim Museum Director Denise Morrison. Visitors will see Corinthian Hall in mid-renovation, the bare interior of the building exposed for the first time in decades. Tour begins at 12:30 p.m. and costs $5
Community Solutions on Mental Health
Kansas City Mayors Sly James and Mark Holland will host a community conversation event regarding mental health. This is a unique chance to learn about mental health in a safe and welcoming environment and to recommend actions to improve the lives of people living with mental health issues. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ballroom in the Muehlebach Tower of the KC Marriott Downtown, 1213 Wyandotte, Kansas City, Mo. Seats are limited. The Holy Cross Parish Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 5106 St. John Ave., Kansas City, Mo. The free event will include ethnic foods, games for the kids, entertainment and raffles.

Northeast Chamber Luncheon
The Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly luncheon beginning at noon at the Northeast Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd. Guest speaker will be Eric Petersen who will talk about the H&R Block Business & Career Center and Donna Mandelbaum of Parson & Associates who will talk about the streetcar initiative for Northeast. Mid America Begonia Society Show
Mid America Begonia Society will host its annual show and sale at Loose Park Garden Center, 5200 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 27-28. Hours of Sept. 27 will be noon to 4 p.m. for the plant sale and hours of Sept. 28 will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the plant sale and 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the show. Admission and parking are free.
Health and Wellness Walk
Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center has partnered with the Jackson County, Mo., Chapter of The Links to host a health and wellness walk on Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Health screenings will also be available on site. The walk begins at the Spirit of Freedom Fountain, located at Brush Creek Blvd. and Cleveland. Registration is $10 per person and $5 for children under 12. Northeast Streetcar Meeting

Community Harvest in the Park
Jerusalem Farm, a non-profit organization that addresses home repair needs for low income families and individuals as well as community building, will host the first annual Community Harvest in the Park at Cliff Drive Disc Golf Course. The event is geared toward celebrating the neighborhood and will kick off with a disc golf tournament from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Competitive and non-competitive divisions will be available. Entry fee for the tournament is $30 per individual or $50 when you register with a friend, and includes lunch, event T-shirt, a commemorative mini-disc and two raffle tickets, as well as a chance to win longest putt or closest put to the pin competitions. Beginning at 11 a.m., there will be kids games, local booths and live music. Food, festival T-shirts, discs, raffle tickets and farmer’s market goodies will be available for purchase. The raffle drawing will begin at 3 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Jerusalem Farm, which is located in Historic Northeast.
