Once again the Northeast News has garnered two Excellence in Journalism awards in the Missouri Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were announced at the press association’s annual convention held recently in Branson, Mo. This year’s contest was judged by members of the Virginia Press Association.

The Northeast News received a second place award in the Class Four Weekly category for Bryan Stalder’s Election Day cartoon, above, which uses a Halloween theme to poke fun of election day and the candidates. Judges noted ElBryan’s use of colors as well as the cartoon’s simplicity and effectiveness.

The newspaper also scored an honorable mention award for former Editor Emily Randall’s story last spring about the tragic murder of a Northeast High School student. Randall reported on the vigils held for 16-year-old Juan Garcia and interviewed those who knew him. Judges noted Randall’s ability to find a broader perspective of crime in a minority community through the eyes of a crime prevention group.

This is the eighth straight year the Northeast News has won excellence awards for journalism from the Missouri Press Association.
