Jackson County Prosecutors have charged a 20-year old Kansas City man in connection to a brazen, daylight home invasion robbery last week in which over $40,000 in jewelry was stolen.

Kevin T. Woods of South Kansas City is charged with one count of Second Degree Burglary and one count of Stealing over $25,000, a Class C Felony. A neighbor’s Ring doorbell system and some old school police sleuthing have been credited with leading authorities to the suspect.

Court documents show that a home in the 100 block of Garfield Avenue had the front door kicked in by a man and an accomplice occupying a black Dodge Charger. The victim, whose alarm company notified her of the break in, responded to the home with police and discovered jewelry that was missing along with a bottle of oxycodone. Responding officers contacted a nearby neighbor that had a RING doorbell system. That doorbell camera captured the black Charger and the suspect, along with an accomplice, kick in the front door of the residence.

Investigating officers noted the car had aftermarket rims, so police reports were pulled for the year 2018 that had a black Dodge Charger with aftermarket rims mentioned in the report. After review of the reports and automated license readers, a match was discovered that came back to the suspect’s vehicle and Woods. Additional video footage from National Pawn in the 6600 block of Truman Road showed the suspects selling the victim’s jewelry. Upon being contacted by police, Woods denied any involvement but could not explain being captured on video both in the car and at the crime scene.
