Miss Shizuoka: Restored and Reunited – at KC Museum
The Kansas City Museum has welcomed home Miss Shizuoka, who was on a year-long loan from January to December 2016 to the prefecture of Shizuoka in Japan. Miss Shizuoka (also known as Fujiyama Mihoko) is a Japanese Friendship Doll; she is one of 58 dolls sent from Japan to the United States in 1927 as part of a doll exchange between the United States and Japan. Miss Shizuoka will be on display in Corinthian Hall in her new kimono and with her new accouterments until April 29.
NEKC Chamber business classes continue
The Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s next business-oriented course for chamber members will be held on Wednesday, April 19 at the Chamber offices (2657 Independence Ave.). Chairman of the Chamber Board and local attorney Jerry W. Potocnik will lead a class about real estate acquisitions, in which he will explain what you should know about buying land. Members, contact Rebecca Koop to enroll / RSVP for this series of classes. Non-members who live in the community are welcome to attend. Come to one class to get acquainted with us.

The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
North-East Library ESL classes
Come learn and practice English at the North-East Public Library Branch on Monday’s and Thursday’s from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Let the library help you adjust to U.S. culture with speaking, writing, and reading English. For more information, contact the library at (816) 701-3485.
Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting
The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, April 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center (1512 Van Brunt).
Taste of SVN Night
The community is invited to Scuola Vita Nuova (535 Garfield) on the night of Thursday, April 20 beginning at 5:30 p.m. for its ‘Taste of SVN’ event. SVN has over 200 students who speak seven different languages, and all of the school’s cultures will be featured at this special event. “Taste of SVN” will give SVN families the opportunity to learn and socially connect with various cultures that make the school unique. Join in to celebrate elements of SVN’s culture or ethnicity through, music, food, and dance. Families are invited to the school to share their favorite family dish. Special performances include student exhibits of their native country, a “Take the Stage” 4th grade dance performance, live music by “Calle Vida,” and dances from KC Team and Viva Social Team.

Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, April 21 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.
Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, April 21, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise.

Earth Day recycling event
Looking to get rid of some hard-to-recycle items? Head out to Manual Tech Career Center (1320 Truman Ave.) between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. Items being recycled will include various electronics, clothing, toys, small appliances, glass, tires, yard waste, bicycles, washers and dryers, building materials, and mattresses. There will also be on-site document shredding.

Sunday Matinee Movie
Join the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for its Sunday Matinee Movie Day on April 23. The library will be screening two features back-to-back: The Great Gilly Hopkins and Surf’s Up 2. This event is suitable for all ages.
Kansas City Beer: A history of brewing in the heartland
Head out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library system on Sunday April 23 beginning at 2:00 p.m. to hear author Pete Dulin discuss his new book Kansas City Beer: A History of Brewing in the Heartland. Dulin will describe how advancements in transportation and technology, European migration, and industry competition fostered early growth in the local brewing industry. His book also explores how the rise of the major breweries of the post-Prohibition era – including Boulevard Brewing – led to this modern wave of craft brewers.

Kansas City Jazz Orchestra listening party
The Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch will host a Kansas City Jazz Orchestra listening session on Monday, April 24, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Clint Ashlock, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, will be featuring one of his favorite albums, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. Miles Davis, trumpeter, composer, and band leader, released this album in 1959. Kind of Blue has been regarded by many critics as jazz’s greatest record, Davis’ masterpiece, and one of the best albums of all time. Its influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical genres, has led writers to deem it one of the most influential albums ever recorded.

Scarritt Renaissance seeking volunteers for KaBOOM! build
The Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association has moved the date of its KaBOOM! playground build, and the neighborhood now seeking volunteers to help with construction on Saturday, April 29, beginning at 9:00 a.m. No matter your skill level, the neighborhood can use your help. This playground is for children 2-5 years of age, which will provide them a safer alternative to previously-built playground for 5-12 year old children. If you have construction skills, if you have the ability to carry parts to those building the equipment, or if you are willing to help with food pick up,the neighborhood can use your help. If you have hand tools, mobile table/mitre saws, heavy duty long extension cords, Scarritt leaders ask that you bring them and be sure they are labeled with your name. Chalk Walk in the Historic Northeast
Head out to the annual Chalk Walk in the Historic Northeast event on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day at the fountain in Concourse Park (St. John and Benton). This free, family-friendly event transforms the dull, grey concrete of the sidewalks and surface of the Concourse Park Fountain into colorful, pastel canvases.
